Leaving Home – Ep 4: Moving Into the College Freshman Dorm

Those of us who drove or flew in to college can relate to this part of the story. I personally remember driving down in my father’s Nissan Pathfinder packed to the brim with every little thing that I thought was important to me from my room at home including EVERY shoe, pair of jeans and accessory I owned. HA! What a mistake in hindsight.

“Leaving Home” Bonus – For the Parents

If you talk to many HBCU alum, they will reenact accounts of their parents being so happy to get them out of the house that as soon as they unloaded their bags, they began to cough from the burning rubber and exhaust fumes as their parents peeled away leaving them to experience EVERY part of their college experience by themselves.

Well, in this clip, you notice something a little different.

While stocking up for Kaiya’s freshman year, we ran into some parents of another incomming freshman who Kaiya’s parents met during the family orientation week that prior summer. They came equipped with lists of “College Necessities” to pick up for their daughter.

What was your experience like? Did you just get dropped off or were your parents/guardians buying cart-fuls of “necessities” for you?

The New Black Panther Party Offers a Bounty for George Zimmerman

β€œAn eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth,” New Black Panther leader Mikhail Muhammad said Saturday when he announced the reward at a protest in Sanford, the Orlando suburb where the killing took place.

Can the people of Sanford, FL take justice into their own hands or is this just promoting more violence and the Federal offense of kidnapping?

The bounty has been set for $10,000 but as mentioned, their goal is $1M.

“Leaving Home” An HBCU Story Part 3 – Stocking Up

Remember that moment when you realized you that you were actually going to be staying in that college dorm room after your friends and family left that first day? I think to all of us, it felt like a closet; a cold lifeless space that lacked ALL of the luxuries of our room at home.

I remember that shopping trip with my parents and brother. There were two categories of items; the ones I wanted, the things my parents and brother knew I needed. Although I distinctly remember being salty that day just like Kaiya was, I remember those small things that I never thought I needed or had on my wishlist were what got me through my first few weeks in a strange place alone. Amongst those items were a box fan from AMES grocery store to place in my window [That’s right, no central air], some flip flops for the shower and Buric Acid for any unwanted guests.

It was very funny to me as I followed Kaiya and family to re-live these same moments and feelings. I hope it struck a memory chord with you too.
