Editorial: Do we have the wherewithal to respond to injustice?

Memorial In Brooklyn For Recent Victims Of Police Violence, Eric Garner And Michael Brown

By Be Moore

In 1991, Howard University rested squarely in the hood.

Now, the university hasn’t MOVED, but think of the hood as a sort of tide that rises and encompasses areas, and other times recedes, leaving traces like flopping fish on the ground after a tidal wave. We we’re under water.

Along with hood, comes hood fixings. Familiar things that you’ve surely seen before: bad graffiti, low grade food, and trash that rolls like tumbleweeds. Another key element to the hood is an ever present lack of respect for it’s residents.

Parenting: Tackling ADHD

Julian was just like most other 14 year old boys — energetic, fun loving and sports-minded. Summer was about to end, and the only thing on his mind was making the football team. He dreaded school, but was willing to do anything that would get him on the field again. Julian did not want to re-experience last year: athletically he was on top of the world… starting in football, basketball, and baseball; academically, the world was on top of him…beleaguered with low grades, discipline problems, and missing homework assignments. Because of the latter, the school stopped him from stepping foot on the field of dreams and told him to study harder.

For Julian, it was the worst of both worlds.

Idris Elba talks Ghost Rider, Video Games, and How to Pull Off a Convincing American Accent

With the upcoming release of the Ghost Rider film, based on the Marvel comics character, coming this Friday we received a phone call from a fan favorite and long time friend of AlumniRoundup, actor Idris Elba.

Interview by: Bryndan Moore

You are playing the character Moreau in “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.” So who is Moreau?

In the Marvel Universe, Moreau is a character that reoccurs in many different guises and people, and many different comics. He is not one particular person, so we took the name Moreau and made him into this particular character. Moreau is a Priest who likes to drink, travels the world, has his fighting skills, that is fearless. Basically he is kind of like someone that can look into someone’s soul and say I need you to do this or you need to this. He’s that kind of person.

Leaving Home – An HBCU Story – Part 2 – “First Impressions”

The second installment of “Leaving Home – An HBCU Story,” which traces the journey of a rising freshman as she leaves Los Angeles to attend college at North Carolina A&T University. There is such a juggle of emotions that we all experience during times of transition and growth. We did our best to capture it all in hopes of starting the college conversation with the kids in our families and neighborhoods.

Stic.man of Dead Prez Interview on Roundup Radio

I ran into Stic.Man at a formal reception after a Congressional Black Caucus gala in the Reagan Building, a Federal office and event space in downtown Washington, DC. The crowd had a few entertainers sprinkled throughout, recognizable faces like Isiah Thomas, Holly Robinson and Rodney Peete, to name a few, no real stretch.

The Power of Being Authentic – Karmin

“Do You.”
It’s a message that means nothing more than be your authentic self, and play YOUR role in the big picture. I love seeing examples of people who find ways to show the world their talent, and work hard at it. It becomes just a matter of time before their passion and time investment become well known. At that point most start thinking they “blew up overnight.”

Howard University Proposed Campus Plan for New Dorms

Howard University is laying plans to construct 2 new much needed dormitories along the 4th street corridor. Check out the draft of the proposed plan. Housing has been an ongoing issue on the campus over the years, the lack of which has pushed may students to remote locations far from campus.
